TRENTON-The Trenton Club has bid farewell to both its West State Street clubhouse and its 126-year legacy as a watering hole, squash club and networking spot for some of Trenton’s premiere movers and shakers.
“For now, it’s the end of an era,” former club member Karla Pollack said.
The club, formed in 1884 as the Trenton Bicycle Club, closed its doors in 2010 as membership declined and the cost of keeping up a social club with a dining room, commercial kitchen and outdated squash courts became too high for members. “The overhead of it was just too much,” Pollack said.
At the time, there was some talk of the club relocating to a rented space in Ewing or Hamilton, but the property took longer than expected to sell, and interest waned as past members joined other country clubs or networking groups or simply moved on.
The 10,000-square-foot building, with a much-coveted parking lot, sold in November for $350,000 to the General Baptist Convention of New Jersey, real estate agent Anne LaBate said. The sale was below the original $750,000 asking price, but club members were somewhat relieved the Baptist group planned to use the building and not just tear it down and build new.
